Hilary Cartwright’s Yoga Narada Retreat in Tuscany, 22nd July – 5th August (7 or 14 nights)

Join Hilary and Chirriposa Retreats for one or two weeks on our annual Yoga Narada Retreat in Tuscany. Set in a secluded Tuscan countryside farmhouse, with a beautiful swimming pool, and surrounded by acres of forests and vineyards, this retreat offers both the chance to escape the crowds and yet enjoy outings to nearby cities and towns if so desired. There is the possibility to fly into Rome a few days earlier, or leave a few days later, to enjoy the sights, plus have the comfort of travelling on a small private bus to and from our venue at the beginning and end of your stay.

The retreat is designed to speak to all the senses. My chef and organiser extraordinaire Angus Stephens, is English but fluent in Italian, and a master chef, who not only caters to all dietary needs, but chooses locally sourced and preferably organic foods for the magnificent breakfasts and lunches he prepares. He also guides the in-house cooks for the traditional Italian evening meals, which can be accompanied at your choice with the properties organic wines. His wonderful wife Tania, who is herself half Italian, joins Angus in welcoming the guests, and looking after their needs. She is also a brilliant photographer, recording all the little moments one doesn’t always remember!

Accommodation

I am very excited to invite you to join me in this beautiful agroturismo, set in the Tuscan countryside. The ethics of our hosts follow my own heart, both in that they are an IMC certified organic farmstead, and that they cultivate their own organic wines!.

The setting is idyllic in acres of woodland, olive groves and vineyards, and close to the mediaeval towns that hug the hillsides, waiting to be explored. This makes it an ideal holiday vacation, as well as the perfect place for a Yoga Narada retreat.

Yoga

Yoga Narada is named after a humourous Vedic sage who believed that through music and movement one could achieve wisdom and enlightenment, equally as well as through silent meditation. For me as an ex-dancer a state of meditation, and indeed a meditative quality arrives through movement, and maintaining a sense of humour no matter where we are is vitally important to maintaining a healthy, happy and well balanced life. I try to incorporate all this into the classes, and let people find a common bond through the work.

The focus is on developing a healthy spine, and opening yet strengthening all the joints in the body, through a progressional and fluid process. Unlike regular Yoga classes, it does not follow a series of static poses. The body unfolds first through a gentle stimulation that begins with a slow discovery of sensorial awareness both physically and mentally, followed by specific breathing exercises leading slowly into movements that are larger and fuller. All achieved within each individual’s capacity, and with a continuous flow to open and regenerate the spine. The Yoga room, is light and airy, providing the sort of ambience I feel is necessary for opening oneself to self discovery and expansion. My style of Yoga is approachable by all, young and old, experienced and novice. There are no pressures to achieve, only to fulfill your own journey, wherever it may be headed and whatever point you are currently at.

Retreat schedule

– Morning yoga class (2.5 – 3 hours). Starting with a slow warm up and breathing and concluding with a gentle cool down
– A healthy lunch
– Afternoons free for outings, wine tasting, or just relaxing and swimming in the pool (or having a massage)
– One afternoon Yoga session per week, for deeper exploration of the work on a personal level, whereby individual questions can be answered more fully and personally
– Typical healthy Italian dinner in the evening. Wine served if desired.
