Fierce Grace Yoga & Cycling at La Chimera, Tuscany
Take a group of passionate cyclists to La Chimera, where our usual suspects – Chef David, Fierce Grace Yoga founder and chief instructor, Michele Pernetta and support team are joined by cycling instructor Mark Tschanz, with his unique take on how to radically improve your cycling skills in a structured meditative way, in which the group evolves their riding over the course of the week – in an enjoyable, natural process.
While the model for other Organized Cycling Trips, generally caters to the advanced or very advanced cyclists, with a goal minded – racing inspired – record based purpose, at La Chimera, the emphasis will be on a variety of rides tailored to the group’s skill level, moving from gentle to more challenging as the week passes. The philosophy behind the rides is to make them pleasurable – with plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and stops in selected towns and villages for refreshment. A support vehicle with cooler and other essentials follows the ride and Terry on his infamous Fierce Grace Harley will act as guide and interpreter.
Each day ends differently, with either a dinner – with wines – at the house or trips out. One day is reserved for dropping out and relaxing by the pool, having massages or a visit to a hot-spring. Different Fierce Grace Yoga classes are available on a daily basis to relax muscles and support the challenges of the rides.
We offer a very special type of retreat at La Chimera, which has delighted and surprised our thousands of visitors since we began running our worldwide retreats in 2001. We believe that our guests come to us to enjoy the retreat process and get happy. For this reason we don’t impose rules and restrictions about diet, mandatory attendance, or try to control the group’s behaviour. There are cocktail and party evenings, wine with every dinner and a good deal of music and dancing. It’s an ideal place to drop out and just meditate if that’s your passion, but we won’t make you!
Activities centre around a series of spectacular rides – in the mornings –and yoga in the late afternoon. Guests arrive at lunch on Friday, where, after a Tuscan lunch, they will check their bikes and can spend the afternoon resting by the pool and getting to know La Chimera. We serve a traditional aperitivo with cocktails before dinner on the first evening and the real business of the retreat begins Saturday morning with the first ride. We welcome riders and yogis of any level. None of the activities or the rides are compulsory.
La Chimera, our restored village fortress, is nestled 400 metres up a valley at the beginning of a gentle mountain range that separates Tuscany from Umbria. For six years it’s been the location for many memorable yoga retreats, which feature nightly Tuscan feasts on the open dining terrace, visits to the spectacular local medieval towns and castles for markets and dining out, thermal baths, local festivals and a good deal of dancing into the nights.
The landscape is unspoiled and breath-taking – hidden roads wind through mountains, forests and along lakes, joining the many ancient walled fortress towns, climbing up hills to castles in a variety of gentle and more challenging elevations. The region contains thousands of square miles of pristine forest and supports a variety of wildlife including deer, wild boar, huge porcupines and even wolves. It’s no coincidence that the Italian Giro has been through this country many times.
Mornings are spent riding. We will be taking in the spectacular beauty of the national parks that surround us and visiting a number of hilltop medieval towns and villages, including Cortona, Preggio, Citta di Castello, Monte San Maria Tiberina and Lake Trasimeno.
After lunch, which can be either in a local village or at La Chimera, there will be some time to relax and swim before the daily fierce grace yoga, taught by Michele.
Most evenings are spent eating delicious dinners, with wines, on our outside dining terrace. Two nights are spent visiting local medieval towns for dinners. shopping and drinks.
We have a cinema and usually have at least one movie night at the house If the weather is not too hot, we usually have an evening around our fire-pit – the most popular night of the retreat!
Michele Pernetta is the founder and owner of Fierce Grace yoga, the UK’s top hot yoga style. Her twenty years of experience is reflected in the growing success of FG worldwide and the 50,000 regular students at our studios.
Mark Tschanz grew up in the Franco-Swiss cycling culture, but only really became a cycling enthusiast as an adult upon his move back to California. He has passed the 100,000 Miles threshold as a road cyclist this year and is a regular participant in such century races or rides as The Santa Barbara Century and the Ojai Century. His purpose is to help others attain a level of skill, technique and strength required to bring any landscape within reach.
Cuisine is predominantly Tuscan with some international dishes added. It is specifically tailored to support energetic days of riding and yoga, so plenty of protein, carbs and raw, served by David, our brilliant chef. We serve meat and fish and there are no imposed diet restrictions but we cater to vegetarians, vegans, gluten free guests as required.

What past guests have said
“Ideal for those looking to escape hectic city life and find greater balance in mind and body.” – VOGUE
“Michele and Terry are wonderful hosts at their villa located in the middle of a valley scooped out of the Tuscan hills. It is a wonderfully peaceful setting which allows for a relaxing time and provides an ideal backdrop for a great retreat. Michele’s energy, enthusiasm, passion and knowledge tests and expands limits to new levels in classes and posture sessions. Her experience over many years of teaching many people means she has a complete and uncanny understanding of where an individual is – which can be unnerving for a while until you realise through her gentle (and sometime not so gentle) persuasion a weekend or longer spent on a retreat here can be one of the best ways to ensure a greater depth of practice is achieved; more is learned about it and, (maybe) more about yourself. “ – Russell Whithair
“Thank you for the most incredible 5 days – it has been packed with everything I love and the inspiration, adventure, food & fun has been endless”. – Katie Young
